COUNTRIES THAT WON THE MEN AFCON TITLE FROM 1957.

The African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) is a tournament played by all qualified African countries. The competition is held every two years at different parts of Africa. Below is the list of countries that won the title since 1957.

AFCON 2022 award winners

EGYPT (7 TITLES)

1st title: Egypt won their first AFON title in the year 1957 after they defeated Ethiopia 4-0 in the final game. The tournament was hosted in Sudan.

2nd title: Egypt defeated Sudan 2-1 in the final match to take their second title. The game was hosted in United Arab Republic in 1959.

3rd title: Egypt won their third AFCON title in 1986 after they defeated Cameroon in penalty shoot-out in the final game. The tournament was hosted in Egypt.

4th title: Egypt’s fourth AFCON tilte was won in the year 1998 after they beat South Africa 2-0 in the finals. The game was hosted in Burkina Faso.

5th title: Egypt won their fifth title in the year 2006 in their own home. They defeated Ivory Coast 4-2 in penalty shoot-out.

6th title: Egypt and Cameroon made it to the final of the game in 2008 for the second time after meeting in 1986. Egypt defeated Cameroon 1-0 to win their sixth AFCON title. The tournament was hosted in Ghana.

7th title: Egypt defeated Ghana 1-0 in the year 2010 to claim their seventh AFCON title. The game was hosted in Angola.

CAMEROON (5 TITLES)

1st title: Cameroon won their first AFCON title in the year 1984 after they defeated Nigeria 3-1 in the finals. The game was hosted in Ivory Coast.

2nd title: Cameroon and Nigeria made it to the finals for the second time in 1988. Cameroon defeated Nigeria 1-0 to claim their second AFCON title. The game was hosted in Morocco.

3rd title: Cameroon claimed their third AFCON title in 2000 after they defeated Nigeria in penalty shoot-out. The game was hosted in Ghana and Nigeria.

4th title: Cameroon beat Senegal in penalty shoot-out in the year 2002 to take their fourth AFCON title. The competition was held in Mali.

5th title: Cameroon won their fifth AFCON title in the year 2017 after they defeated Egypt 2-1 in the finals. The game was hosted in Gabon.

GHANA (4 TITLES)

1st title: Ghana claimed their first AFCON title in the year 1963 after they defeated Sudan 3-0 in the finals. The competition was hosted in Ghana.

2nd title: Ghana and Tunisia made it to the 1965 AFCON finals which Ghana defeated them 3-2. The tournament was held in Tunisia for the first time.

3rd title: Ghana won their third AFCON title in 1978 after they beat Uganda 2-0 in the final stage. The game was held in Ghana.

4th title: Ghana and the host nation which was Libya made it to finals of the 1982 AFCON competition. Ghana defeated Libya in penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw to claim their fourth AFCON title.

NIGERIA (3 TITLES)

1st title: Nigeria won their first AFCON title in the year 1980 after they defeated Algeria 3-0 in the finals. The game was hosted in Nigeria which was a host and win for them.

2nd title: Nigeria’s second AFCON title was won in the year 1994 after they beat Zambia 2-1 in the final stage. The game was hosted in Tunisia.

3rd title: Nigeria defeated Burkina Faso 1-0 in the year 2013 to claim their third AFCON title. The competition was held in South Africa.

ALGERIA (2TITLES)

1st title: Algeria won their first AFCON title in the year 1990 after they beat Nigeria 1-0 in the final stage. The game was hosted in Algeria which was a host and win for them.

3rd title: Cote D’Ivoire won their third AFCON title in 2024 after they defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the final game. The tournament was hosted in Cote D’Ivoire.

ZAIRE (CONGO-KINSHASA) (2 TITLES)

1st title: Congo-Kinshasa won their first AFCON title in the year 1968 after they defeated Ghana 1-0 in the final stage. The game was hosted in Ethiopia.

2nd title: Congo-Kinshasa now called Zaire won their second AFCON title in the year 1974. They defeated Zambia at Egypt to claim their second title.

ETHIOPIA (1 TITLE)

1st title: Ethiopia defeated United Arab Republic 4-2 in the year 1962 to claim their first ever AFCON title. The game was hosted in Ethiopia which was a host and win for them.

SUDAN (1 TITLE)

1st title: Sudan hosted the 1970 AFCON tournament and they became the winners for the first time after they defeated Ghana 1-0 in the final stage.

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO (1 TITLE)

1st title: Democratic Republic of the Congo won their first ever AFCON title in the year 1972 after they beat Mali 3-2 at final stage. The competition was held in Cameroon.

MOROCCO (1 TITLE)

1st title: Morocco defeated Guinea in the year 1974 to claim their first AFCON title. The game was held in Ethiopia.

SOUTH AFRICA (1 TITLE)

1st title: South Africa the hosting country defeated Tunisia 2-0 in the final stage of the competition in 1962 to claim their first AFCON title.

TUNISIA (1 TITLE)

1st title: Tunisia hosted the 2004 AFCON tournament and they became the winners for the first time. They defeated Morocco 2-1 to claim their first AFCON title.

ZAMBIA (1 TITLE)

1st title: Zambia won their first AFCON title in the year 2012 after they defeated Ivory Coast in penalty shoot-out. The game was hosted in Equatorial Guinea Gabon.

SENEGAL (1 TITLE)

1st title: Senegal defeated Egypt in penalty shoot-out after a goalless draw in the year 2021 to claim their first AFCON title. The competition was hosted in Cameroon.
